I can DO Everything By MYSELF- A Myth

Hello Everyone!

Ladies, don't we love to hear the SUPERWOMAN title?
Women enjoy being attended to, appreciated and applauded. To achieve this immense pleasure, we work hard and try to fulfil all our duties and responsibilities. Many times, in-spite of being overloaded, we still proactively try to lessen the load of our partner/spouse or other family members. No matter, how much time, energy or health it takes, we deliver our best in every field, whether at work or at home. I guess, the release of happy hormones (Dopamine), after being productive and efficient are the main culprits.

As a working Mom to toddler twins, I strive hard each day to fulfil my work and home responsibilities. As for me, I try to plan my day, multitask and achieve the goals. The striking off from checklist at the end of day is the most fun part. But do you realize, how much stress it generates, if we fail in achieving any one of the goals at work or home. Many a days, due to unforeseen issues, like the babysitter not showing up or sudden job targets or deadlines to be met, we get more stressed .

Inspite of all these going on in our hectic lives, we have to go through more, like dealing unsympathetic and insensitive people. People will judge you for your mood swings without having any idea that you may be going through a tough time or Post-Partum Depression (PPD). People will judge you for feeding your child with formula milk (whatever may the reason or necessity be). People will judge you for not visiting them for a while or not socializing (no matter how inconvenient and difficult it is). People will judge you even if your child gets sick or doesn't achieve the milestones they had set for them. People will judge for not quitting your job and call you ambitious (as if it is a negative quality).

To get appreciation at work, every time women have to put extra effort to be at par with our male contemporaries. Then there are people who think Maternity leave is a luxury only women enjoy and question our dedication and commitment. Even after all the constraints, if we excel at work or bring some laurels to the organisation with our achievements, we are looked down and seldom appreciated.

My POINT is - No matter what you do, you will be always be judged and compared against some benchmark.  You cannot always live up to everybody's expectations always or go on pleasing everyone.

I can DO Everything By MYSELF is a Myth. If we work non-stop at home and at work, still there is always something left to be done. And even if we achieve our daily targets, do you think you have taken good care of your health or spent some quality time with your kids or family? Each day is important for you and your child; because this create memories and bonding. This is one of the best parts of your life; so think and act on it. Enjoy the magic of doing uni-tasking at a time and discover how creative one can get and enjoy the calm. Its better to work smartly at home too.
Make a support system that works for you at workplace and at home.
Don't be reluctant to ask for help from your colleagues ,friends and family.
Outsource the less important daily chores and focus on spending quality time with your family. If possible, help other woman around you and empathize with them.

Take a break...Prioritize yourself for a while...Going through PPD, get some help or talk to someone...Pamper yourself; maybe with just a head or foot massage...Listen to your favorite music while you do your household chores...Go visit your parents...Take a short trip...Eat your food without counting the calories... Wear that Red lipstick...Pursue your hobby...At least devote half an hour just for yourself everyday...
After a month or so, you will realize that you are getting less irritated and feeling more happy and your child being more happier. Remember, only a happy woman can make a happy family.

Hope I made a small gesture in making you feel happy and inspired.

Until next time, stay happy and spread happiness.
Debjani

  12. Very well put dear. Often working women especially post marriage and kids fall prey to various sorts of expectations from society, colleagues, family.
Thanks for reminding all of us once again that self care is equally important. We need to prioritise ourselves more without feeling guilty about it.
I loved reading it. Looking forward to more such posts.

    Love
